0.3 per cent inflation recorded in Lithuania in August 

Statistics Lithuania informs that 0.3 per cent inflation was recorded in August 2007 as compared with July. 

Prices for consumer goods in August 2007 against July grew by 0.2 per cent, while those for services – by 0.8 per cent.  

The diagram below presents monthly price changes for consumer goods and services as compared with the previous month.

In August 2007 as compared with July, the rise in consumer prices was basically influenced by a 1.9 per cent increase in prices for alcoholic drinks and tobacco, 0.8 per cent – goods and services of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels commodity group, 0.3 per cent – food products and non-alcoholic beverages. The price growth for the said goods and services was partly compensated by a 0.3 per cent fall in prices for clothing and footwear and transport goods group. 

Changes in prices for the group of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products were mostly influenced by a 5.5 per cent increase in prices for cigarettes, 0.7 per cent – Lithuanian vodka, 2.0 per cent – sparkling wine and brandy. 

Changes in prices for the group of goods and services related to housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels were mainly influenced by a 2.5 per cent increase in price for hot water, 1.8 per cent – firewood, 3.6 per cent – centralized heat supply through the hot water piping system. Materials for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling went up in price by 1.5 per cent, housing rental rates – 0.9 per cent, liquefied gas for cooking – 0.8 per cent. 

The most decisive influence on the change in prices for food products and non-alcoholic beverages was made by a 5.3 per cent increase in prices for milk, dairy products and cheeses, 1.5 per cent – meat and meat products, 1.0 per cent – bread and cereals, 3.6 per cent – butter, oil and fat. Fresh vegetables went down in price by 21.4 per cent, fruit and berries – 5.3 per cent, potatoes – 29.6 per cent. 

Changes in prices for transport group goods and services were mainly influenced by a 4.9 per cent decrease in price for petrol, 3.4 per cent – bicycles, 0.2 per cent – diesel fuel. Liquefied gas for cars went up in price by 5.6 per cent, local passenger road transport services – 5.2 per cent. 

In clothing and footwear commodity group, due to summer sale, a 0.3 per cent decrease in prices was registered for clothing and 0.4 per cent – for footwear. Shoe repairing went up in price by 2.0 per cent, dry cleaning, repair and rent of clothing – 1.3 per cent. 

Regarding other goods and services, which determined the general change in prices in August, the following could be mentioned: a 3.1 per cent increase in prices for package holidays, 0.5 per cent – public catering services, 1.3 per cent – goods and services for routine household maintenance, 0.4 per cent – furniture, 1.5 per cent – each odontologists’ services and funerary articles, 0.6 per cent – services of hairdressing salons and personal grooming establishments, as well as a 3.2 per cent decrease in prices for data processing equipment, 1.3 per cent – telephone and fax equipment, 6.7 per cent – sports goods, 0.5 per cent – flowers. 

In August 2007, annual inflation (August 2007 against August 2006) made up 5.5 per cent. The annual inflation rate was stipulated by a 10.5 per cent increase in prices for food products and non-alcoholic beverages, 11.4 per cent – housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel group of goods and services, 10.1 per cent – services of hotels, cafes and restaurants, 6.7 per cent – alcoholic beverages and tobacco, as well as a 4.8 per cent decrease in prices for clothing and footwear, 7.0 per cent – communication goods and services. Over the year, consumer goods went up in price by 5.1 per cent, services – 6.7 per cent. 

Average annual inflation in August 2007 was 4.5 per cent.

NOTE. Annual inflation shows relative changes of the average price rate between the current month and the corresponding month of the previous year. Average annual inflation shows relative changes of the average price rate between the average of the latest twelve months and the average of the corresponding previous twelve months. 

A press release on the July 2007 CPI is due on 8 October 2007.
