Foreign trade in Lithuania, 2008 

Statistics Lithuania reports that according to non-final data obtained from customs declarations and Intrastat reporting data, exports in 2008 totalled LTL 55.5 billion in terms of commodity value, while imports to Lithuania equalled LTL 72.6 billion. The foreign trade deficit of Lithuania made LTL 17.1 billion and was by 6.5 per cent lower than in 2007. Data on trade with EU countries were adjusted after VAT declarations’ data had been received. 

In 2008 against 2007, exports and imports increased by, respectively, 28.4 and 18.0 per cent, mineral products excluded, exports and imports increased by, respectively, 11.6 and 0.2 per cent. Exports of goods of Lithuanian origin in 2008 against 2007, grew by 31.3 per cent; mineral products excluded – by 5.4 per cent. 

The major impact on the growth of exports was made by the increase in exports of petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals (2.5 times), fertilisers (by 65.1 per cent), cereals (2.1 times). Imports grew due to the increasing imports of crude petroleum and natural gas (2.4 times), natural calcium phosphates and crude or unrefined sulphur (3.8 times), railway or tramway locomotives, rolling stock and parts thereof (3.4 times). 

In December 2008 against November, exports and imports decreased by, respectively, 15.0 and 9.3 per cent; seasonally adjusted, exports decreased by 5.5 per cent, while imports remained almost unchanged. 

In December 2008 against December 2007, exports and imports decreased by, respectively, 3.2 and 8.8 per cent, mineral products excluded, exports and imports decreased by, respectively, 4.0 and 17.4 per cent. 

In 2008, the most important partners in exports were Russia (16.1 per cent), Latvia (11.6 per cent), Germany (7.2 per cent) and Poland (5.8 per cent). The most important partners in imports were Russia (30.1 per cent), Germany (11.7 per cent), Poland (10.0 per cent) and Latvia (5.2 per cent). 

In 2008, the most significant share in exports fell within mineral products (25.0 per cent), machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (10.6 per cent), products of the chemical or allied industries (9.7 per cent). The most significant share in imports fell within mineral products (29.7 per cent), machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (14.2 per cent), and vehicles, aircraft, vessels and associated transport equipment (12.1 per cent).
